Fridge Not Cooling but Freezer Working? 5 Causes and Fixes
It is one of the most common calls we get in Dubai: the ice cream in the freezer is rock-hard, but the milk in the fridge is warm. Because the freezer still works, the compressor and refrigerant are almost certainly fine. The problem is getting that cold air from the freezer into the fridge.
How Cold Air Reaches Your Fridge
In most modern no-frost (frost-free) fridges there is only one evaporator, the cooling coil, hidden behind the freezer's back panel. A fan blows air across it into the freezer, and a duct with a small damper lets part of that cold air into the fridge section. When anything interrupts that path, the fridge warms up while the freezer carries on as normal.
The 5 Causes, From Most to Least Common
1. Ice Blocking the Evaporator (Defrost Failure)
No-frost fridges melt frost off the evaporator several times a day with a defrost heater. If the heater, the defrost sensor or the thermal fuse fails, frost keeps building until it seals the air channel. This is the number one cause of this symptom in Dubai, where humid air enters every time the door opens.
How to spot it: Remove the freezer's back panel (on some models it sits behind the drawers) and look for a solid block of white ice. You may also hear the fan blade scraping against ice.
The fix: Unplugging the fridge for 24 hours with the doors open melts the ice and restores cooling, but only for one to two weeks. The failed defrost part must be replaced. Our fridge repair technicians test the heater, sensor and fuse and replace the one that failed.
2. Evaporator Fan Motor Failed
If the fan behind the freezer panel stops, cold air no longer circulates. The freezer can stay cold for a while because it sits right next to the coil, but the fridge warms quickly.
How to spot it: Open the freezer and press the door switch with your finger. You should hear the fan. Silence, or a hum with no airflow, points to the fan motor.
3. Air Damper Stuck Closed
Many fridges use a motorised or mechanical damper to control how much cold air enters the fridge. If it sticks closed, the fridge warms up while the freezer over-cools and food at the back of the freezer gets frost-burned.
4. Blocked Air Vents Inside the Fridge
An over-packed fridge, or a large container pushed against the rear vent, blocks the airflow. Check this first: it is the only cause you can fix in thirty seconds.
5. Faulty Temperature Sensor or Control Board

Checks You Can Do Before Calling
- Move items away from the vents at the back of the fridge section.
- Check the door seals close properly all the way round; a torn seal floods the fridge with humid air.
- Listen for the fan while pressing the freezer door switch.
- Look for heavy ice behind the freezer panel.
- Note any error code on the display.

Why This Happens More Often in Dubai
High humidity along the coast, frequent door opening in summer and kitchens that stay above 30°C all load the defrost system. Every time warm, humid air enters the fridge, the moisture freezes onto the evaporator, and a weak defrost heater can no longer keep up. Keeping door seals in good condition is the best prevention.

Is it a gas problem if my freezer works but the fridge is warm?
Almost never. If the freezer is cold, the refrigerant and compressor are working. The problem is airflow between the freezer and fridge, usually a defrost or fan fault.
Can I fix a frozen evaporator myself?
