"My fridge needs gas" is something we hear every week in Dubai. A fridge that is low on refrigerant will not cool properly. But refrigerant is not consumed like fuel. If the level is low, it has escaped somewhere, and adding more gas treats the symptom rather than the cause.
Signs Your Fridge Has a Refrigerant Leak
- The compressor runs almost constantly, but the fridge is only cool, not cold.
- Frost forms on only part of the evaporator.
- Cooling has got gradually worse over weeks or months.
- You hear a faint hiss or see oily residue at a pipe joint.

How a Proper Gas Repair Works, Step by Step
- Find the leak. The technician uses an electronic leak detector and, if needed, pressurises the system with dry nitrogen to locate small leaks.
- Repair it. The leaking joint is brazed, or the leaking section replaced.
- Replace the filter drier, which traps moisture inside the sealed system.
- Vacuum the system to remove air and moisture. Moisture left inside freezes and blocks the capillary tube.
- Recharge by weight with the correct refrigerant (R600a or R134a) according to the rating plate.
- Test temperatures and running time over the following hours.
